About Granville Island

Granville Island is Federal public land that belongs to all Canadians.

Founded by visionary leadership in the 1970’s, the Island has a unique land use mandate that promotes urban experimentation and community building. There are two primary historical documents that outline the philosophy of Granville Island - the 1976 Report of the Interim Trust and the 1979 Reference Document. These documents are valuable and relevant today, as the historical principles that established Granville Island still remain a timeless recipe for innovation.
